Clothing can sometimes be tricky to find the right size.  This is due to several factors.  First, every manufacturer has different designs of the carpenter pants they make. Some may have a higher waist or some may have a smaller diameter leg opening. Second, all of our bodies are different and we all wear carpenter pants and other garments differently.

If you are purchasing Dickies carpenter pants, you should consider these pointers they provide to measure yourself before purchasing your carpenter pants.

    Measuring for proper fit

    1. Waist measurement - Place tape measure above the hipbone and measure all the way around your waist to get the proper waist measurement.

    2. Inseam measurement - Measure from the base of the crotch to the top of the boot or shoe that you will be wearing with the carpenter pants. If you are buying "carpenter jeans", Dickies recommends that you add one inch (in.) to the inseam measurement

Other tips for ensuring the proper fit for your Dickies carpenter pants.  The tape measure should be pulled snug, not tight.  Take all measurements in inches (in.).  If your measurements are in between sizes, order the next larger size.

    What are Carpenter Jeans?

    carpenter jeans

Carpenter jeans, which are also referred to as carpenter pants have been around for decades.

Carpenter pants are designed with many different pockets to both carry job specific tools as well as accomodate additional tool belts to carry even more tools and hardware for a particular job.

Carpenter pants are often worn by of course carpenters, but also construction workers, painters, electricians and other skilled tradesmen.

The features and benefits of carpenter jeans

    1.  Designed to Carry

Carpenter pants are designed to hold more weight than your average pants or pair of jeans.  They need to be able to support the weight of a tool belt as well as various tools that can be stored on or around the pants themselves.

    2.  Variety of colors

Most tradesmen probably don't care that much what color their carpenter jeans are as long as they are comfortable and durable.  However, there are some people that may have a preference because of the type of work they do.

For example, many painters wear white carpenter pants because they paint with white paint so much.  For them to smear some of that white paint on their pants, you would hardly notice.

For carpenters, electricians, plumbers or other workers, they may not care as much for the color of pants that they wear but the nice thing is that they have a variety of colors and designs to choose from.

    3.  Flexible fit

Carpenters and other skilled tradesmen are moving around constantly which is why all of the carpenter pant recommendations in this guide include pants that have a flexible fit.  A flexible fit is one that provides comfort all day long and may include some 'stretch' in the material that the pant is made of.

Whether you are squatting, stretching, reaching or bending, the carpenter jeans can give you the comfort you need to last all day long.

    4.  Tool Pockets

Most carpenter pants these days have anywhere from five to seven different pockets.  These can be used to store or hang tools from so they are easier to access. There is nothing worse than having to get down off of your ladder or the roof to go find a tool that you need. Carpenter pants help you to have the tool you need, when you need it.

    5.  Hands Free

Another benefit of carpenter jeans is the ability to work hands free. Use the hammer loop to store your hammer.  If you didn't have a place to hold the hammer, you would probably be holding it in only one hand.  Only having one hand free to do a job can really slow you down and keep you from finishing the job on time.

    6.  Wide Waist

Many carpenter pants are designed and built with a wider than normal waist. This is done for a couple of reasons.  First, having a wider waist can help distribute the weight of your tools more evenly.  The other reason that carpenter pants have a wider waist is because it allows you to actually carry more weight without causing your pants to fall down off of your waist.

    7.  Boot Cut Leg Openings

Another benefit of the carpenter jeans is that they have a boot cut leg opening.  This means just what it sounds like. In other words, the leg opening of the pant is cut wide enough that it can fit over a heavy duty work boot.  This is a must have feature in a carpenter pant.

    8.  Wide Belt Loops

Even though your carpenter jeans have many tool pockets, most skilled trademen will also be carrying some kind of toolbelt.  Similar to how we talked about the reason for a wide waist in the pants, tool belts are generally wider than normal belts because they are carrying more weight.

Because the belt of the tool belt is normally wider and more heavy duty, the carpenter pants are also making an accomodation for this so you don't have to worry about your favorite trusty tool belt not fitting your new pants.

Why is hammer loop on left side?

If so many people are right handed, why did they design carpenter jeans to have the hammer loop on the left side of the pant?  Wouldn't it make more sense to put the loop on right side so that they right hand could easily grab it.

According to a couple of reports here and also here, carpenters pants were first designed as painters pants and the two pockets that are on the outside of the right leg were designed to hold the painters scraper and putty knife.

For the painter, the scraper and putty knife would be used more that the hammer so the hammer was moved to the loop on the left pant leg.  If you are left handed, the placement of the hammer loop could be perfect for you!

    Who Should Wear Carpenter Jeans?

    carpenter jeans

Anyone really can use carpenter jeans. In fact, although they have primarily been used by trade workers such as electricians, carpenters, plumbers and other skilled tradesmen, they have also been a new fashion trend throughout the years.
