What makes this work glove unique is that the middle finger and forefinger are open but the material is extended to cover the nail and top of finger.  This may or may not make a big difference to you but it was something we wanted to point out since it is something we hadn't seen in other work gloves.

fingerless work gloves

When were fingerless gloves invented?

According to one website, fingerless gloves were first used by the Romans and Greeks.  Their use was very different from how fingerless work gloves are used today.

Back in the day, fingerless gloves were popular with the upper wealthy class who liked to show off the jewelry on their fingers while still covering the rest of their hands and wrists.  These were not fingerless work gloves, rather part of their wardrobe. As such, their gloves were made of fine materials such as silk, soft leather or velvet and came in different sizes, lengths and styles.

Why do people wear fingerless work gloves?

Today, fingerless work gloves are worn for many reasons and these reasons will vary depending on what type of work you are doing.  In general, fingerless work gloves are used for three primary reasons, protection, grip and versatility.

Protection

If you think about the trade professions that use their hands alot, you can imagine how important protection would be for them. Take for example a mechanic.  They are working with hard, heavy auto parts such as tires, engines, batteries and mufflers.  Expecially when they are working inside an engine, it can be very easy to bash your knuckles, hands or fingers into another part of the car on accident.  This is just one example.

A few of the many other professions that need this hand protection include construction, carpentry, manufacturing, fabrication and electricians.

Grip

Another reason that people wear fingerless work gloves is for the grip. Sometimes work gloves can be bulky and can limit your dexterity if you are doing something that requires small parts.  Sometimes the best option is to not wear gloves at all.  This is where the fingerless work gloves come in.

Fingerless work gloves give you protection everywhere you would normally want it but leaves the finger tips exposed so that you can do those fine tasks without having to take off your gloves.  All the grip where you need it and all the protection everywhere else, a perfect combination!

Versatility

Versatility is another reason people wear fingerless work gloves.  As previously stated.  This type of work glove gives you the best of both worlds, the best grip and the best protection.  It's a win-win!

Materials used in the best fingerless work gloves

When you are choosing any workwear or work gear, it is important to consider the types of materials that a particular piece of gear is made of.  There have been many new technological advances over the years in all types of industries which have greatly improved many tools. At the same time, some materials such as leather, continue to be durable and long lasting.  Here are some of the materials you will find in the best fingerless work gloves:

  • Leather
  • Synthetic leather
  • Spandex
  • Cotton

Leather

There are several types of leather that are used in gloves including cow leather, pig leather and  goatskin leather.

Cow leather is the best type of leather to look for when you need a work glove that is the most durable.  Cow leather is thicker than other types of natural leather and can protect your hands from the elements (both hot weather and cold weather.

Pig leather is another type of leather used in work gloves.  Pig leather is not as thick as cow leather but still durable and performs well especially in dry environments.

Goatskin leather is another option for some work gloves or some parts of the gloves.  It is thinner than both cow and pig leathers so it gives you a bit more agility and flexibility in your hands while wearing them.  If you are doing something requiring more finesse, goatskin leather may be a good option for you.

Synthetic Leather

Both natural leather and synthetic leather are processed with chemicals during maufacturing. This means that both of these types of materials do not biodegrade easily but since natural leather is an organic product, it could eventually break down sooner than a synthetic.

A synthetic materials is usually a material that is created using some synthetic or natural fibers and then coated with a plastic polymer.

Synthetic leather is a material intended to substitute for leather in items such as fingerless work gloves where a leather-like finish is desired but the actual material is cost-prohibitive or unsuitable.  Synthetic leather can also stand up to a lot of abuse and in some cases may be more durable and longer lasting.

Spandex

As you probably already know, spandex is a material that is very stretchy. It can be found today in many pants, shirts, hats, underwear and other workwear products.

Spandex has a few characteristics that is useful in fingerless work gloves, first it is very soft and comfortable.  Spandex is also more breathable than materials such as leather so it may be used in areas of the glove to help the glove not feel so warm.

Cotton

Although you may not think that having a cotton work glove is a very smart idea, it all depends on what kind of work you are doing.  Even work gloves for the toughest jobs may have some cotton materials in them

For example, some fingerless work gloves have a patch of cotton material on them on the outside of the thumb and the thumb crotch area.  This can be used to wipe away sweat from your face without having to take the glove off or get a towel or something else.

Cotton is great for something like that because it is soft, can be cleaned easily and fairly durable for this type of usage.

Features to look for in fingerless work gloves

So how do you know if fingerless work gloves are right for you or will meet your needs on the job site?  Here is a list of some of the features you will find in this type of work gloves so you can decide which pair is right for you.

Cleaning

Are they washable?  This may or may not matter to you depending on the type of job you are doing but is is a feature to consider when making your purchase. Generally work gloves made out of leather are not going to be washable like a pair of cotton or work gloves made out of a synthetic material.

Knuckle protection

This is an important feature for many professions such as mechanics or machinists who are working around heavy metal objects all day long.  Thinner gloves may not have the protection you need so look for something that has plastic or hard rubber material on top of the actual glove in the knuckle area.  This is going to help absorb any shock that comes throughout the course of your work day keep you healthy.

Palm padding

Again, depending on the type of work you do, you may want to consider a work glove that has padding in the palm area.  If you are using your hand to hit anything, this is feature is a must have.  Also consider this feature if you are a carpenter or hold something in your hand all day to do your work.  Gripping a hammer all day or even digging with handtools like a shovel can take a toll on your hands leaving you sore or blistered.  Get a pair of work gloves with a padded palm and you'll be in good shape!

Sweat Wipe

If you are like many of us, you work up a healthy sweat when you start moving around doing your job.  The sweat wipe is one of my favorite features of a work glove because it allows me to wipe the sweat off my brow or drips going into my eyes without having to stop or use my shirt to do that.

Many sweat wipes are made from soft cotton or terry cloth material so it won't scratch you and just gets the sweat off.
